Kapalua Bay is an unusually calm and protected bay with a nice beach and excellent snorkeling. The small bay is protected by a reef. Within the small bay are a large population and variety of reef fish. Sea turtles also make their home in the bay.

This area is ideal for beginning snorkelers. Calm water, lots of reef fish. Easy access.

Outside the bay's reef, the currents can be strong and care needs to be exercised.

On the right is what fish see when snorkelers. come calling.

Most of the fish pictures below were taken after attracting fish with fish food. Check with the local dive shops for availability and legality. Hawaiian fish and game wardens will arrest you if you are caught with fish food at state parks and beaches. Make sure fish food is legal at the location where you will be snorkeling. before getting near the water.

A giant sea turtle is on the right. The picture quality is degraded by the flash used and smudges on the lens.

The fish below was extremely aggressive towards me and the fish food. It bit through the plastic bag I had the food in. The plastic bag had a chunk bit out of it.

Care must be exercised when feeding fish underwater. Some fish can present a danger. Obviously, you would not want to attract sharks.

Drying off at left after snorkeling in Kapalua Bay.

We rented our snorkel equipment. We also rented our beach chairs. Don't rent equipment from your hotel. You can save serious money by renting from shops all over Maui.

Also, there is a Wal-Mart and a K-Mart on Maui. Consider purchasing umbrellas, beach chairs, and snorkel equipment from these retailers. Prices in some cases will be lower than rental.
