Hawaii - The Big Island is the biggest island in the Hawaiian Island chain. There are two airports - Hilo and Kona. We flew into Kona. While on the island, we stayed at the Waikoloa Beach Marriott. Left - The Kona airport doesn't have the regular big city terminals. You actually get off of the airplane and walk into the terminal from the outside. Below - We visited Akaka Falls State Park. There are two large falls. The one pictured below is Akaka Falls. |
|
Above and left - Inside Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, there is this hotel/restaurant called Volcano House. We at lunch here. It was reasonably priced and the food was good. Below - there are a number of steam vents in the park. Ground water is heated by the lava/magma in the volcano and boils. The boiling water is released as steam above ground. It doesn't smell. |
|
Also inside the park the Thomas A. Jaggar Museum. The Museum also functions as a US Geological Survey volcano observation laboratory. An observation deck is shown on the left. Below left - Close up shot of one of the many craters. The bright yellow color stood out in the boring dark lava colors. Below right - The viewing area had telescopes for use. |

Above - Panorama view of crater. Below - Panorama view of a different crater. Note - both craters are within the same overall larger crater. Craters inside craters. |

Right and lower left - The Black Sand Beach (Punalu`u Beach Park) has beautiful black sand. Below right - Concession stand at the Black Sand Beach. |
