South Llano River State Park is located near Junction , Texas.  Junction is in the Texas Hill Country.   The Texas State Parks web site has information about this and other Texas State Parks.

This is the third time we have been to South Llano River State Park. The first trip to South Llano River State Park was last year around this time. The second trip to South Llano River State Park was in the spring of this year (2004).

This last trip had something new for us. We met Buzz (Sid) and Francyne Underwood at the park and we camped and cooked together. All of us brought our bikes and we rode many of the ranch roads in the park.

Below left is Buzz and Francyne's campsite. Below right are their dogs.

When we arrived in the camp, we got out our twelve portable dog fences as we have been doing this past year. About an hour after I had encircled out campsite with the fences, the ranger stopped by. Apparently, there is a discussion going on with the rangers on whether or not fences like ours and Buzz and Francyne's do or don't violate the leash rules for the park. Right now, the rangers are talking to campers about the issue. At some point the Parks Department may decide that fences like ours violate the leash rules.

Buck Llake (shown below) was within a short 10 minute (slow) walk from our campsite. Our campsite was across from the public restrooms and showers and next to the trail leading to the little lake. I wouldn't recommend our particular spot again on a crowded weekend. Too much traffic and noise by our site. Outside of the summer time, I'm not sure that the trails and the lake are accessible. People tend to upset the roosting turkeys so the park rangers shutdown many of the trails. Check with the Texas State Parks Department to find out dates and times.

Above left - Buzz and Francyne are looking out over the South Llano River. We rode our bikes over to this spot. The bike trails are old farm roads that are fairly flat. When the old farm roads are dry, they are a joy to ride on. I wouldn't expect them to be much fun wet.

Above right - Some folks are playing in the river.

Below left - A fellow (not Buzz) is fishing. Buzz did go fly fishing. I'm thinking that Buzz is practicing catch and release these days. I don't know if the fishing was any good. We didn't see anyone catch a fish.

Below right - The park boundaries are pretty well marked by fences and signs.

On one of our bike trips down the old farm roads, Buzz or Francyne spotted this fawn. The baby deer is so well camouflaged that it took me a few minutes before I could find it. I almost stepped on it. Baby deer don't move when there is a predator (me) walking around their hiding place.

Below right - Buzz is wondering what is taking me so long. Francyne is off and riding.
