See all of the pictures taken in and around San Angelo State Park here!

San Angelo State Park is located near San Angelo , Texas.  San Angelo is in the Panhandle Plains region of Texas.  Some folks might want to consider San Angelo part of Hill Country.   The Texas State Parks web site has information and a map of the park.

People always say to eat at Zentner's Steak House if you are ever in San Angelo.  We did.   It was marvelous!

There are two areas to come into the park.  The North and South Shore areas.   We are staying on the North Shore area.  The campsites in this area are shaded by large mature pecan trees.  If you value shade, the North Shore area would be the best bet from late April to early November.  That is, from when the pecan trees leaf out and lose their leaves in the fall.

The South Shore area gives better access to boating types of activities.   However there is very little available shade in the South Shore campsites.

The park is kind of hard to understand.  The best bet is to look at a topographical map and to try to apply the park map to the topographical map.  Not an easy task.

The park appears to be in the flood plain for the dam.  I'm assuming that the dam is for flood control.  The dams spill way is visible from FM 2288.  The up stream side of the dam is visible from the South Shore camp areas.

Our campsite is in the North Shore area.   These campsites are shaded by large mature pecan trees.

We played dominoes on our picnic table.

There is a playground in the North Shore area.

Across from the North Shore area dump station is a large field.  We didn't think anything of it when we first saw the field driving in.  However, on the way out at 8:00 AM in the morning we stopped at the dump station.  We were watching the deer in the field over by the ranger hut.  Our dogs kept barking and we couldn't figure out what they were barking at.  Then we noticed it: PRAIRIE DOGS!   I've never seen prairie dogs in the wild before.
