See more pictures taken at the Monterey Bay Aquarium here!

The Monterey Bay Aquarium is located in Monterey, California.  Monterey is on the California cost between Los Angeles and San Francisco. Monterey is much closer to San Francisco than it is to Los Angeles. This aquarium has been the backdrop for a number of movies and television shows. At some level, this aquarium is famous. The aquarium appears to be a popular family weekend destination. It was very crowded during our visit.

There are a number of displays based on some very large multi story fish tanks. The Outer Bay Exhibit is a good example. Huge two story fish tank. Lots of rather big fish including most of the big scary kinds of sharks. The Kelp Forest is another good example. This one is also two floors tall. From my scuba diving days, the fish, kelp, and wave action is exactly as I remember it. There are also some cool schooling fish swimming around. For those of you that ever had a fresh water aquarium with more than five neon tetras - imagine a large fish tank with over a thousand two inch long neon tetras. Very cool.

Our favorite exhibit was the sea otters. They had three otters visible from above and below the water that were pretty active and engaging with the crowd. Our biggest disappointment was the penguin display. Not very many penguins and not the right species that look like little butlers (Emperor Penguins).

We had hoped they would have live dolphins or whales on display. None were present. Darn!
