Mission Tejas State Park is located on the edge of Weches , Texas.  Weches is between Crockett and Alto. The park is in the Piney Woods Texas region.  The Texas State Parks web site has information and a map of the park.

While Mission Tejas State Park is less than an hour drive from Rusk/Palestine State Park, the park is really rather different. The campsites in Mission Tejas provide more privacy than the ones in Rusk/Palestine. Mission Tejas has fewer visitors than Rusk/Palestine. The Mission Tejas forest is deeper and taller than Rusk/Palestine. Mission Tejas is quieter - you can't hear the highway like you can in Rusk/Palestine. All in all, Mission Tejas State Park is peaceful, quiet, private, and calm. This is a nice change from the hustle and bustle of Rusk/Palestine State Park.

The park is well maintained and the park staff is especially courteous and helpful.

There isn't much to do in Mission Tejas. The "replica" mission is not historically accurate. I found it kind of cool looking anyway. The Rice family log home is also fun to walk through. We visited Caddoan Mounds State Historic Site while we were staying at Mission Tejas.

If you want to ride the trains in the Texas State Railroad State Park and the thought of being in a crowded park doesn't appeal to you, consider Mission Tejas. It is close by and nice and quiet.

Above, the highway entrance to the park (left) and the ranger station (right). Look how tall the trees are!

The Mission Building (shown to the right) is not a historically accurate replica. It looks cool anyways. The inside of the church is simple and clean.

The Rice Family Log Cabin is cool. While the home is simple in design and layout, it is very functional. I especially like the porches and the dog trot (shown in the picture below).

Our campsite backed up to a little ravine/stream. The picture on the right was taken from the campsites behind our campsite. The lower part of the picture is the ravine. The upper part of the picture is our campsite.

Below is our campsite. This 180° view is from the edge of the ravine.

We had the park pretty much to ourselves (one other camper) Thursday night. Friday afternoon, a bunch of folks showed up. All of the campsites around us were taken (we were in the only section that had electric/water/sewer). Even with all the campsites around us filled, it didn't feel crowded. The panarama below shows 180° view of our campsite area. This was taken minutes before the campsite on the furthest left was filled.

One of the things that really surprised me about this park was the free firewood. Almost all of the campsites had piles of firewood. This particular spot was on the road into the camping area.

The ranger station had some material on how the acquired the firewood. Apparently, the wood is provided for free by area sawmills. Forestry is the major industry in the area.

The group camping area (shown to the right) was invaded by boy scouts Friday night. All the kids were well behaved and well supervised. It was quite a gathering.

The tent camping areas (shown in the two pictures below)
