Lake Corpus Christi KOA

This is a nice campground. Our site is one campsite row from the lake. The campground has two primary camping zones. A large flat area at the top of the hill where the main building is and a gently sloping hillside that slopes down and flattens off at the river. The hilltop area has the best and most flat pull through. It also looks to be the most likely area to be quiet. The hillside area has a number of cabins. The lakeside row of campsites has water, power, and no sewer. These sites are also back in. We are staying in the second campsite row from the water. These are full hookup pull through sites. The first two rows have plenty of trees. The campsites on the hillside aren't level. Next up the hill are the cabins. There are loads of cabins. The campground roads are rather narrow in places. Also, the roads are a dirt and sand mix. By the way, the soil is mostly sand. Drainage should be good.

The picture above shows our campsite. The power isn't working in the campsite adjacent to ours which is why our truck is parked there. Under the curbside tires I've placed blocks made from 2X6's to raise that side of the trailer up. The slope on the hill is such that unhitching the truck was a thrill. I had to keep raising the trailer so the top of the tailgate would rub the trailer as I pulled out. I expect hitching will require backing the truck so the fifth wheel is directly under the pin. Then I'll have to lower the trailer onto the fifth wheel so it pushes the truck down. I expect that will keep the back of the truck from hanging up on the trailer.

Some TV coverage is available. It appears as though we were getting the Corpus Christi TV stations. The tree over the trailer wouldn't allow the antenna to rotate so we couldn't get a feel for how good the reception could be. It required the use of the antenna booster.

The above picture was taken from under the awning on our trailer. The dock (partially hidden behind the trees) juts out into the water. A number of folks were running their boats from the dock this afternoon (Saturday) but not yesterday (Friday).

Looking from the dock back toward our campsite, you can see my pickup truck but the trailer is hidden in the trees.

The main building has the campground office, a restaurant, and a store. Additionally, the store contains showers. There don't appear to be any laundry facilities here. The store had a weird mix of products. Oddly enough, the mix seems to be all of the things you would forget to pack for a camping trip. Very few prices were marked so I couldn't tell what the value proposition is. The candy selection was limited. I had hoped to find a Pay Day candy bar. No such luck. I had a very good Captain Crunch Ice Cream Bar instead. Yummy. There are soda machines at the entrance to the showers. None of the soda is of the diet type. Limited selection. Soda selections inside the store were limited as well. Also, Linda wanted some ice tea in a bottle. Like the Lipton bottled variety. No such luck.

The following picture shows the upper flat area of the park. This is taken from the park exit back toward the swimming pool.

Saturday, August 10, 2002 Afternoon

It was quiet last night. Blondie woke me up at 3:30 AM last night. She needed to go out. While we were walking along the road, I looked up and was able to see the Milky Way. All the stars shine very brightly. We walked out onto a floating dock. The one street light over the dock shines on the water. There were 20 or so large catfish swimming about. Every once in a while one of the fish would jump out of the water to get a bug. Off in the distance, a large thunderstorm was laboring along. I could easily see the lightning but the thunder was silent. The storm never made it to us.

Above is a picture of the street light on the dock where the fish gather at night.

Above is looking toward the trailer's left (street side). The park was not full last night (Friday) and I don't expect it to be full tonight.

Other Items of Interest In the Area

We looked at other parks in the immediate area. Wilderness Lakes RV Park is OK. I think in some ways it is nicer than this one. It isn't on the lake but it does have a number of ponds on the grounds. The pull through spots are numerous, level, and wide. It looks like the grounds keepers haven't been able to keep up with all the rain this year. Decent trees are fairly dense in this campground. Also, this campground is next to the base of the dam.

Sunrise Beach Campground has an obvious no dogs policy. They have signs all over. We won't be staying there. This park is on the water.

Lake Corpus Christi State Recreation Area State Park is very nice. Of all the parks in the area, this one is my favorite. It has under 40 full service hookup pull through spots. There are lots of trees above and around the pull through spots. Our trailer is too tall to fit in some of the spots because of the tree overhang. The full hookup area is real close to the shoreline. The dogs would really dig it. One of the rangers said that the park doesn't start filling up with Winter Texans until the end of September or beginning of October. Could it really be that early? Sunday Morning Walk Around

I got up at the crack of dawn (literally) to walk the dogs. I took the camera along with me. Below is one of the cabins at the top of the hill near the campground office.

Below is the swimming pool. Note the hot tub in the back right hand corner of the pool. Every time we went by the pool yesterday, it was well attended by children. At times there were adults in the hot tub.

Another view of the pool. Taken from near the hot tub. To the left of the field of view is the dump station, propane tanks, and the office building (across the street).

The KOA office doubles as an office, general store and restaurant. It also has showers (right hand side) that Linda looked at and said she could use.

It seems that every RV park has a dumping station. You can see the swimming pool in the background. The picture above was taken from in front of the dump station in about the same spot the picture below was taken. I suspect that we could pull a u-turn with the trailer. There is quite a bit of room here to turn around.

I always worry just how safe this type of setup is. The picture doesn't do the sense of disorder any justice.

As I walked the dogs, I took a wrong turn toward the boat ramps. Here is the first of the two boat ramps I found. What I like about this part of the park is the road follows the shoreline from this boat ramp to the area where we camped. It is very calming and there are a number of little view points along the way with park benches to sit on. The road (really a trail large enough to pull a boat trailer through) is sand worn smooth by box blades and slow moving vehicles. It looks like a great area to ride bicycles.

The other boat ramp, shown below, has cement to back down. Since the water is somewhat higher than usual, they both might have cement or paving down into the water. However, I don't think I would want to pull a large boat out of the water without four wheel drive. It looks like you would get stuck.

The boat dock is below.

I wanted to see if I could capture how crowded the park would feel if it were full. The spaces are narrow. I estimate around 15 feet. Also, you can get a sense for what this type of camping is like. This picture was taken from the down hill side or water side of the lane our campsite is on.

This is take from the next lane up the hill. You get a full street side view of the trailer. Full hookups.

Walking in the direction the above picture was taken, I turned around a shot a picture looking back toward the trailer. Under the awning I've got the dog corrals set out. We had the dogs in the corral while we did our dinner barbecue.

Continuing down the lane further from our trailer, I turned around and took this shot.

I turned toward the water at the end of the lane and then turned toward our RV. I got much closer before taking my last picture. See how the tree overhangs the roof? That is why the antenna wouldn't turn.
