See all of the pictures taken in and around Goose Island State Park here!

Goose Island State Park is located near Rockport, Texas.  Rockport is in Aransas County Texas which is along the coastal bend east of Corpus Christi.   The Texas State Parks web site has a map of the park.

This is the second time we have visited this park. The first time was in January 2002. The first time we were here, the old-timers were saying that it was the coldest it had been in thirty years. Seemed pretty cold to us. However... It can always be the coldest or snowiest in recorded history.

Recorded history. That isn't something you would expect to run across during your Christmas vacation. We received the most snow ever recorded in this part of South Texas. By more than double. Ever. This is also the one and only White Christmas ever recorded here. Ever. Recorded history.

We originally planned to leave home on Friday - Christmas Eve Day. Early in the week, the weather forecasts were calling for freezing rain, sleet, and/or snow in the San Antonio and Rockport areas early Christmas Eve Day. That would have made our drive from San Antonio to Rockport pretty hard. We decided to leave Thursday, a day early. We arrived at the park late Thursday afternoon and setup our campsite. For South Texas, it was extremely cold - 40 degrees. From Thursday night through Friday night, it continued to get colder and colder. Christmas Eve just after sunset, it began to snow. Around 10:00 P.M. Christmas Eve, we went outside to check it out.

Christmas morning we got up and we had a white Christmas with over 4 inches of snow on the ground!

After visiting Goose Island State Park, we went South to Mustang Island State Park. While staying at Mustang Island State Park, we rode the Port Aransas Ferry, visited the USS Lexington Aircraft Carrier, visited the Texas State Aquarium, and drove around the Padre Island National Seashore park. Then we moved inland to Goliad State Park.

Above left - A number of people were out taking pictures. I'm sure he (like us) was expecting daytime highs in the 70's.

Above right - Our neighbors. Some diehard folks were even fishing Christmas morning.

Left - I would imagine that the folks in this popup camper were very chilly overnight.

Below left - This woman is from New Braunfels, Texas. She was down visiting some family living just outside of the park. She said she never expected it to snow here. She thought it would be snowing in Hill Country.

Below right - These folks were out taking pictures. They were also from Texas. Texans find this type of weather to be a once in a lifetime event. You would have to live here to understand.

Above right - Great Blue Heron hanging out looking for food.

Right - Waterfowl against a snowy backdrop.

Below left - American White Pelican. These birds are not very common but I have seen them in this park both times I've been here.

Below right - Brown Pelican - normally pretty common. I expected to see a dozen or more of these birds. Only the one was hanging out. Must be too cold.

Postscript - It warmed up to the low 60's today (Sunday 12/26). We saw dozens of both white and brown pelicans. Lots more birds in general and the birds we saw we much more active.

Above right - This could be one of any number of birds. My top two candidates are Long-Billed Curlew (bill is slightly down turned) or a Long Billed Dowitcher (breeding male has a rusty breast).
