See additional pictures of Caprock Canyon here!

Caprock Canyons State Park is located near Quitaque (KIT-a-KWAY), Texas.  Quitaque is in the TEXAS Panhandle Plains.   The Texas State Parks web site has information and a map of the park.

Caprock Canyons has much in common with Grand Canyon.  It is fair to say that Caprock is on a much smaller scale than the Grand Canyon.  However, CAPROCK CANYONS ROCKS!  The park is huge.  The views are astounding.  The park has been in a prolonged drought that has taken a toll on the park infrastructure.  The showers have been turned off.  The water has been turned off in all but a few campgrounds.  Since there aren't any campsites with sewer, we have to use the dump station.  Normally that isn't a problem but in this park, the water at the dump station has been turned off.

Good news:  it was raining when we arrived.  The rain is really needed.

I've included topographical maps so you can see how rugged the terrain is.

Above right is a horse corral in one of the horse camping areas.  They have a number of corrals with campsites.  If you have horses, this park is for you.  They have miles of trails suitable for horses.

Lake Theo is very low because of the prolonged drought in this area.  The boat ramp (below left) doesn't even make it down to the water.   The fishing pier (below right) doesn't even extend out over the water.  The dock is high and dry.  See the pictures two rows down.

The Buffalo Interpretive Center is under construction.   It looks like it will be very cool when it is done.  The building is open on two sides.  Swallows have moved in and made the building their home.

Texas Horned Toad.  Almost ran the poor bugger over with the truck.  I brake for toads.
